Pop-Ups & Performative Walks

The EPA is a leading site-specific performance company with roots in Butoh and Bodyweather. For DINGO, members of the group will be joining with local site-specific performers to create a series of pop-ups and performative walks throughout the festival. They will be exploring hidden corners and surprising places around the town and revealing them to festival-goers to highlight the experience of Bangalow itself as a major feature of the festival.

The Lucky Star Theatre Co. (SCYTHE) is an experimental, interdisciplinary art theatre company founded by conceptual artist and performer Marchéline Vernette. Evolving from SCYTHE’s artist-led curation, it brings together actors, filmmakers, musicians, writers and visual artists to create immersive, site-responsive works exploring identity, memory and the boundaries between reality and fiction.

THE PLACE REMEMBERS is a site-responsive performance laboratory bringing together actors, sound artists, filmmakers, writers and sculptors to create an interdisciplinary work through sustained engagement with a single site. Rather than beginning with a fixed script or traditional hierarchy, architecture, bodies, sculpture, projected image, sound, gesture, memory and language operate as equal forces. Across the development period, the ensemble will explore how a place can accumulate, distort and transmit memory. The project culminates in a series of interconnected scenes created within and in response to the site, combining devised theatre, installation, live sound, sculpture and moving image.

Chloe Smith

Outback Cinema

Chloe is a Northern Rivers based artist whose work spans installation, costume and sculpture. She has worked on behalf of some of Australia’s most prominent artists helping realise their work as large sculptural installations. Her iconic bumper stickers have graced roads Australia wide and her soft sculpture works have been exhibited locally and internationally.

The great Australian road trip is a rite of passage that has long been portrayed on screen. In the face of rising oil prices, global unrest, environmental collapse, and the rapid gentrification of rural towns, what does the future of the great Australian road trip look like?

OUTBACK CINEMA is a participatory micro-cinema screening four-wheeled short films. Allow our hosts to usher you to your seats in the world’s smallest and possibly only cinema to operate in a Subaru Outback. Grab a popcorn and choc top at the Boot Bar, buckle-up, and come experience cinema in the outback.

Concordia Soundtracks

Concordia Obscura

Concordia is an experimental audio-visual project born in Melbourne, VIC, and now also based in Bangalow, NSW, since 2023. The project has explored curating intimate and deep listening sessions to movement and A/V performances, recently evolving into a mix and release label strongly championing sound across genres from so-called Australia.

CONCORDIA OBSCURA is an installation of a world constructed from the mechanics of a pinhole camera. An audience is invited to enter a space enveloped in darkness with beams of light bleeding through — these form a live and moving picture of the world outside. OBSCURA captures and celebrates the everyday sounds and sights of Bangalow through Concordia’s “lens”, reinterpreting the experience through the design of a deep listening and viewing space.

Michael Li

Lemonade

Michael Li is a musician and interactive sound artist based in Byron Bay, Australia. His practice explores the relationship between sound, nature, technology and human interaction. Through interactive performances and installations, Michael transforms plants, fruits, everyday objects and unconventional interfaces into musical instruments, creating playful experiences that invite audiences to become active participants in music making.

LEMONADE (Life Gives You Lemons, Make Music) is an interactive live sound performance exploring how anyone can become a musician. Using plants, lemons, touch, electronic technology and everyday objects, the work creates an intuitive environment where audience members are invited to interact with sound and become part of the music. The project grew from Michael’s own journey as a musician and his search for more intuitive and accessible ways of creating music. Rather than focusing on musical skill or traditional instruments, the performance encourages curiosity, play and experimentation. By turning unexpected objects into instruments, the work invites people to question what an instrument can be, discover their own creativity and connect with others through music and nature.

Rachel Cooper

Just Between Us

Blackwell Alley · For the duration of the festival

Rachel Cooper is a local painter, textile artist, and Creative Director of Frank & Dolly’s. Her work has been selected by Australian Fashion Council, featured in Vogue, Peppermint, and Frankie. Most recently, her work includes a mural for Haven Gallery, and art direction for DINGO Festival. She is always chasing the next bold creation.

JUST BETWEEN US is a bold painted image on a wall, paired with a single question. Visitors write their answer and press it into the image, which fills in, card by card, over the course of the festival. The name plays on a contradiction, a question some may find intimate or private, put on public display, its promise of intimacy kept only by anonymity: everyone can read the answers, no one knows whose. The work finishes once the DINGO community completes it, becoming a quiet record of who came through Bangalow during DINGO’s first year, in their own words.

Jacqui O’Reilly

Resonant Fields

Jacqui O’Reilly presents an electroacoustic performance on her return to Bangalow. Attending to the acoustics of place, its rhythms, textures and traces of human and more-than-human activity, the work will emerge through listening, walking, gathering and sounding, alongside interior memories and the patterns they shape. Through intimate attention to sound, these encounters will unfold in a live performance as a call and response between Bangalow as it is now and the lasting imprint it made on the artist at a formative time in her life.

Jacqui O’Reilly is an artist and musician from Aotearoa New Zealand, now based on Gadigal Land. Jacqui’s experimental practice investigates identity, place and sensory perception with a focus on sound as material, to explore social and environmental relations. Her performances have been presented at the 25th Biennale of Sydney, DRAW Space Gallery in Sydney, Pyramid Club in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand, and Wagga Wagga Art Gallery in regional NSW. Jacqui also co-hosts the Listening Space Eastside Radio 89.7 FM.

Georgi Milln

Show Me Your Bones

Georgi Milln is a conceptual, multidisciplinary emerging artist based in the Northern Rivers, working across drawing, sculpture, sound, and mixed media to explore the raw tensions of modern life. Her process is consistent: isolate a concept or feeling, abstract it, then find the material to hold it — resolving through iteration. The work makes her as she makes it.

SHOW ME YOUR BONES is a site-specific sound installation. Its audio is drawn from candid interviews built around questions of the human condition, then cut up and looped in the studio until the words lose their syntax and become rhythm. The work is defined by absence rather than image. It asks viewers to sit and listen alone, in a space set apart.

A table and chair invite viewers to take part: answer the questions, leave feedback, or write new questions that will feed the next body of work.

Roaming Fire

For The Locals is an initiative committed to enriching local communities through a collective desire to inspire creativity, foster social change and build a vibrant, inclusive dance culture. A continuation of dance culture spreading from South-East Queensland into the Northern Rivers, we use dance, music and connection to celebrate locals and create timeless moments.

ROAMING FIRE brings the culture of dance cyphers onto the streets of Dingo Festival. We’ll roam through the festival, reading the energy and creating unexpected moments where a spark feels needed. Like a fire, a cypher needs everyone to contribute to keep it alive, whether that’s adding to the fire or gathering to enjoy the heat. Each person is encouraged to bring their dance as fuel… while breath, trust and respect give the fire air to breathe. We might ignite between acts, down a side street or somewhere completely unexpected. You may even hear us before you see us! Listen for a howl, follow the sounds, find the circle and the courage to step into the fire.

The Songs We Carry

What song do you carry, and what story does it hold?

Step inside Polish, Bangalow’s former Masonic Hall and discover The Songs We Carry, an intimate installation of music, memory, movement and conversation.

Enter a 20-minute one-to-one encounter. Choose a record, bring a song of your own, or simply stop by for a listen. If you’d like to donate a record or two to the project, feel free. Share the memory your music holds and discover how it might move through your body. A story, a gesture, a sway, a breath or a feeling is enough. Each encounter is captured through a Polaroid portrait.

Cost: FREE. Registration required.

Bioregional Design Collective

Local Address is a bioregional design collective of architects and building professionals, exploring how local materials, industries, agricultural systems and landscapes can inform the substance of built form in the Northern Rivers. Through design, research, making & education, we aim to shift our local construction industry towards a regenerative, local ecosystem of resources, suppliers & skills.
