Finn Rees

Finn Rees is a Tasmania-born, Melbourne-based pianist, keyboardist and composer who has quietly become one of the most sought-after musicians in Australian jazz. Best known as one half of Close Counters alongside Allan McConnell, he is also a keys player for 30/70 and Elle Shimada, and created the visual art and design work — under his PIEWACK moniker — for Hiatus Kaiyote and Sampology.

His 2024 debut solo album Dawn Is A Melody, released on UK tastemaker label Mr Bongo, is a spiritual, deeply textured jazz record that draws a line from Alice Coltrane through Herbie Hancock to Arthur Verocai while sounding unmistakably, warmly present. Recorded at Rolling Stock Studios in Collingwood with some of Melbourne's finest musicians — including Allysha Joy, Siwei Wong on harp, and Lucky Pereira — it received a four-star review in Mojo and was named one of Bandcamp's New and Notable releases.
